The quiet town of Balranald is located on the Murrumbidgee River 859 km from Sydney. Originally inhabited by the Wemba-Wemba Aboriginal group, who called the area 'Nap Nap', Balranald was probably the first town settled on the New South Wales side of the river. It is now one of the major entry points to the Lake Mungo National Park. Today it lies between the western edge of the Murrumbidgee irrigation scheme and the romantic Outback destinations of 'Hay, Hell and Booligal' – in fact the property known as 'Hell's Gate' lies only 50km west of the town. Balranald's main industries include the growing of grapes, irrigation and tourism. Heritage Park at the entrance to the town has Tourist Information facilities as well as a number of interesting historic buildings. Balranald is an ideal place for anglers. Both the river and a number of nearby lakes are well stocked with yellowbelly, Murray cod, redfin and carp.
Balranald has two race meetings per year that are a Must See; the Saturday before the Melbourne Cup or Victorian Derby Day and the Balranald Cup in February/March each year. If you love racing this is the place to be. (see attractions for more details)
