Visit Outback NSW

The NSW Outback is a landscape of great beauty which will take your breath away with its grandeur and its drama. It will wrap you up and persuade you to return over and over again because there is nowhere else on earth quite like it. Art, culture, history and waterways are a few of the surprises that can be found in places like Broken Hill, Lightning Ridge (Black Opals), Bourke, Cobar, Wentworth and Corner Country.

The 'backbone' of this wonderful region is the magnificent Darling River which provides the lifeblood for the unique flora and fauna in the area and was once the great inland highway running from Brewarrina to Wentworth.

An exciting new Visit Outback NSW initiative is The Darling River Run - a work in progress with an accompanying image library.

A trip to Outback NSW will leave you with lasting images of the great Australian landscapes. Outback NSW.... put yourself in the picture!

The Darling River Run is an initiative of Outback NSW Tourism to provide all the information needed to learn about one of Australia’s great driving adventures and to discover how best to experience this very special part of Western NSW.

The ‘Run’ starts at Walgett and follows the course of the Darling River through Brewarrina, Bourke, Louth, Tilpa, Wilcannia, Menindee, Pooncarie and to the confluence with the Mighty Murray River. The Darling River Run is not simply point A to point B but the river forms the spine of the journey as there are a vast amount of options for the traveller in the surrounding area. Unique towns (Lightning Ridge and White Cliffs), wonderful National Parks (Gundabooka, Mutawintji, Kinchega, and Mungo), and not forgetting the jewel of Western NSW, Broken Hill.

We will provide resources to learn about this wonderful region of NSW and how best to explore it.

National Parks

parksOutback NSW not only has some of the best National Parks in NSW, but also Australia.

National Parks in Outback NSW are as diverse as the area itself; from the haunting Walls of China at Mungo National Park in the south-west of the State, the evocative river land along the Darling River at Kinchega NP, the very spiritual landscape found at Mutawintji, to the remote outback expanses of Sturt National Park in the very north-west corner of NSW.

Outback NSW Towns

twonOutback New South Wales towns will welcome you with a style that is all their own; whether stopping for a break or stay a few days to explore.

In stark contrast to the fast paced and sometimes impersonal nature city life, to visit Outback NSW is to experience a more relaxed lifestyle and a welcome from the locals allows the visitor to realize that the sense of community that is often lacking in the ‘Big Smoke’ is alive and well in the Outback.
